What courses in writing can I take?

Most writing instruction at U of T happens in other subjects—you'll learn to write by writing about Chemistry, or English Literature, or Political Science. But an increasing number of courses focus on writing in itself

  • See our listing of credit courses, mostly in the Arts and Science undergraduate curriculum. A few focus on Creative Writing. Note also the credit ESL courses at U of T Scarborough.
  • If you're interested in writing as a career, check out the U of T at Mississauga program in Professional Writing. See also the array of courses in the new minor program in Writing and Rhetoric at Innis College.
  • Don't neglect the free non-credit courses that you can take without affecting your GPA. Engineering offers several, and the School of Graduate Studies has a wide choice. Some give transcript notations for successful completion. They cover the range of communication challenges, from making oral presentations to writing scientific reports. A number are tailored for non-native speakers of English.
  • Your Writing Centre may also offer non-credit workshops or short courses, also free of charge. Check our News file and ask at your college or faculty to find out about current sessions.
  • See also the extensive listing of non-credit courses offered by the School of Continuing Studies. They include instruction in English as a Second Language and also a wide range of courses in Creative Writing.
